COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course introduces student teachers to the objectives, concepts and strategies of Curriculum development as they relate to the teaching and learning of technical skills. The various theoretical and philosophical bases for determining the process, implementation, innovation and evaluation of technical curriculum will be discussed. They will also be guided to make comparative analysis of various technical syllabi at pre-tertiary level from different countries and review them to reflect contemporary trends. It will be delivered through lecture, class discussions and field research, seminars and individual and group assignments. The approaches that would be used in the delivery of this course would prepare trainees to ensure the learning progress of all students by projecting gender roles and issues related to equity and inclusivity.

1 Definition and Concept of curriculum Studies in Technical Skills. *Narrow definitions, Broad definitions and Midway definitions of Curriculum

-*Characteristics of good Curriculum definition

-*The official curriculum, Actual curriculum, Null curriculum, Informal or Co-curriculum, Hidden curriculum, Enacted curriculum, Experienced curriculum and Unintended curriculum.

-*Curriculum and Society, Curriculum and education, Curriculum and syllabus, Curriculum and instruction (Dualistic, Interlocking, Concentric and Circular models).

-*Meanings of Curriculum development: Curriculum Planning, Curriculum construction, Curriculum design, Curriculum improvement/change and Curriculum development.

-*Principles of building/composing the Curriculum development team.

-*Conditions for effective functioning of curriculum development teams.

§  Search in sources such as: Khan Academy, Coursera, Udemy, MOOCs to demonstrate and discuss concepts of curriculum

§  Conduct series of seminars on the subtopic with student teachers as the main presenters.

§  use interactive multimedia presentations to examine the stages lists in the subtopic.

4 Comparative Analysis of Curricula §  Comparative analysis of various technical syllabi for JUNIOR HIGH school and TECHNICAL INSTITUTE level from different countries and review them to reflect contemporary trend. Organize students into groups and task them to use their knowledge and skills to develop technical skills syllabus for junior High School (Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia).
