LESSON SEVEN (7) ENVIRONMENTAL THREATS TO HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

This lesson focuses on the environmental factors that influence the growth and development of humans from conception through birth and beyond. It identifies and discusses possible environmental conditions and factors that can affect development across the domains and serve as barriers to learning across the three specialisms. The educational implications of these threats for teaching and learning are explored. Strategies to be used to manage and minimise the effects of the environmental threats on learning are also considered.

Nurture or environment refers to the influences which an individual is confronted with after receiving the hereditary pattern through the genes. These influences start from the mothers’ womb. This is referred to as pre-natal environment. This implies that any factor that affects an individual’s growth and development but does not pass through the genes is considered as an environmental factor. For instance, the mothers’ diet (food), maternal drug, maternal accident may have negative impact on the development of the developing foetus. These include the effects of learning, training peer group influence, infectious diseases etc.
