UNIT 8

TEACHING CONCEPTS ABOUT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY I

Introduction

In this lesson, the student teacher explores the contribution of science and technology to food and nutrition, health, transport, information management, and builds on the concepts of the resources in the environment. the lesson will guide student teachers to develop teaching strategies for teaching this topic at the basic school.

Purpose for the lesson

To provide for student teachers, an opportunity to experience technology and its influence on the teaching and learning of science.

(NTS 1b, 2b, 3a, p. 13) (NTS 1d, p. 12, p.14), (NTS 3e, p. 14), (NTS 3p, p. 14), (NTS 1a, p. 12)

2.      Student teachers produce activity guides for teaching basic school science and technology

Comparing Science and Technology

The words science and technology can and often are used interchangeably. But the goal of science is the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake while the goal of technology is to create products that solve problems and improve human life. Simply put, technology is the practical application of science.

Science is the study of the natural world by collecting data through a systematic process called the scientific method. And technology is where we apply science to create devices that can solve problems and do tasks. Technology is literally the application of science. So, it really is impossible to separate the two. Science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses observation and experimentation to describe and explain natural phenomena. The term science also refers to the organized body of knowledge people have gained using that system.

Technology is a broad concept that deals with a species’ usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects a species’ ability to control and adapt to its environment. In human society, it is a consequence of science and engineering, although several technological advances predate the two concepts.

Item Science Technology
Result Relevance Making virtually value-free statements Activities always value-laden
Evaluation Methods Analysis, generalization and creation of theories Analysis and synthesis of design
Goals achieved through Corresponding Scientific Processes Key Technological Processes
Focus Focuses on understanding natural phenomena Focuses on understanding the made environment
Most observed quality Drawing correct conclusions based on good theories and accurate data Taking good decisions based on incomplete data and approximate models
Skills needed to excel Experimental and logical skills Design, construction, testing, planning, quality assurance, problem solving, decision making, interpersonal and communication skills

Value of Technology in Science

Technology is critical to the development of scientific ideas, scientific methods and science. The invention of telescope (a technology to see faraway objects) helped us realize that we are not living in a Earth-centered world. In fact, with technological advancements in telescopes and other fields, we realized we are not at the center of anything. Similar advancements in genetics, equipment for gene identification & manipulation, us advancing biotechnology (primarily medical sciences). Advances in engines and fuels have brought space age, which is being used for better understanding of space and celestial bodies. These are very few examples of how technology is essential to the development of science.

Contribution of Science and Technology to Food and Nutrition

Food processing allows key nutrients to be sealed in right after harvesting. This in turn means that individuals get more nutrients from the food they eat. Processed foods can also be fortified with additional nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber to boost the health profile of foods.

Science and Technology can also help maintain safe and hygienic conditions during processing, storage and packaging of food. Check raw ingredients and processed food for nutritional value, safety and quality. Research aspects of food processing, food preservation, food quality, food deterioration, packaging, storage and delivery in order to improve them.

Contribution of Science and Technology to Health

Healthcare technology is helping people live longer, reducing wait times and making it easier for doctors to diagnose diseases. Here we discuss 5 key ways that technology has improved healthcare. Through the use of technology in medical research, scientists have been able to examine diseases on a cellular level and produce antibodies against them. These vaccines against life-threatening diseases like malaria, polio, MMR, and more prevent the spread of disease and save thousands of lives all around the globe. Technology can help treat more sick people and consequently save many lives and combat very harmful viruses and bacteria.

Contribution of Science and Technology to Transport

Technology enables people to work from home by making use of the internet, email and the telephone. This helps to manage traffic congestion as it reduces the number of drivers on the roads and public transport passengers during peak hours. Technology have considerable importance for transport systems, as they provide access to travel information, planning tools, opportunities to share transport modes, to work at-a-distance, compare transport mode cost, make payment, improve safety and health.
